Main research areas
I examine the grammaticalized and lexical means of expression of linguistic modality in the two languages. Grammaticalized expressions include, for example, modals and modal particles, lexical devices include verbs, nouns, and adjectives with modal means. I examine linguistic tools from both a grammatical and pragmatic point of view using text corpora. I also research how these are related to each other in the text, how they form a modal network. The differences between the two languages are partly due to language typological reasons, but partly to culturally determined language use patterns.
I analyze German and Hungarian press discourses from a linguistic point of view, I compare the habits of language use, the peculiarities of word usage, the metaphors used, rhetorical and stylistic tools. I examine how, by choosing language tools, participants in discourse position themselves to relate to each other, how certain or uncertain they are in their own position. My research also includes some professional language discourses, mainly in the field of legal language.
Using a model of German discourse linguistics, I examine the comparison of specialized texts as well as the translatability and translation techniques of official and legal terms in German and Hungarian.
