Main research areas
My research focuses on the language competence and attitude, the communication habits, and the ethnic and national identity of young Hungarian Adolescents of German descent. The fundamental question of my work is: in what ways do the identity and use of language of young "Swabians" - influenced by multi-cultural globalisation - change? During the enquiry, this complex question is addressed through interviews, surveys, and observation, involving humanities and social science. Based on the disparate individual family and life stories and the data gathered by a triangulated approach the study endeavours to present general tendencies beside the unique identity traits on the matter of idiomatic and cultural practice, as well as future prospects of the highly assimilated German minority in Hungary.
My research focuses on the examination of interlanguage. Interlanguage is considered to be a complex language system created by learners during the process of second language acquisition. The theoretical and empirical analysis is carried out with the involvement of several scientific areas such as Second Language Acquisition, Corpus Linguistics, Sociolinguistics and Psycholinguistics. In the course of the empiry, written competence of German as a foreign language learners comes under scrutiny, who are students of Germanic Studies at the Eötvös Loránd University. The main objective of my research is the grammatical, semantical, and content analysis of the test group's essays, as well as drawing conclusions that can be used in the teaching of German as a foreign language.
My research focuses on adapting of the Working Out Loud (WOL) method to the university environment. WOL is a learning and working method widely used by big companies in over 50 countries. The members of WOL circles achieve significant progress in their profession while utilizing its techniques. Stories exemplifying the success of this method raise the following question: can we adapt and use it in higher education where new tools for meeting the demands of the labour market are needed? The research attempts to answer the question using data derived from empirical research. It is important to emphasize that the method sees the secret of the success in developing individuals’ soft skills. This goal is of great significance in higher education, as we must equip our student not only with academic knowledge but also with a toolkit that meets the legitimate expectations of future employers towards junior employees.
In 2022, thanks to the support of the OTKA (grant identifier: 142914), a new phase of the Wörterbuch der Ungarndeutschen Mundarten (WUM) project commenced under the leadership of Dr. Márta Müller. The lexicographical work of the dictionary aims to codify the vocabulary of the German-speaking community in Hungary.
One of the features of the online version of the dictionary is the creation of an illustration database within the project framework. This database serves multiple purposes: the illustrations enrich and complement the explanations of meanings, thereby enhancing the informational content of the dictionary entries, and facilitating users’ understanding of the textual meaning descriptions. To ensure the authenticity and reliability of the illustrations, the image database primarily relies on Hungarian German regional museums and collections, as well as private collections, as sources. During the collection process, only a very narrow range of image types can typically be used (e.g., simple photographs of characteristic objects without contextual background). In addition to selecting the motifs, building an image database also involves numerous legal considerations. Legal experts from Eötvös Loránd University provided expert advice during the preparatory and initial project phases, ensuring the collection adhered to legal regulations. They supplied the illustration team with all necessary documents and forms (such as written usage permissions, consents, and data processing information) to guarantee the legal integrity of the collection process. During the 2023/2024 project years, the illustration division under my leadership produced, annotated, and uploaded more than 900 images to the database. Students from two universities, Eötvös Loránd University and the University of Pécs, who study German and German minority topics, have been a great help in the collection and preparation of the illustrations.
