Migration period and Early Medieval Archaeology

My research focuses primarily on the archaeological heritage of the Roman imperial, Migration period and Early Medieval barbarian peoples of the Carpathian Basin and the Central European region, with particular interest in the cultural interrelationships of Late Antiquity/Byzantium, Northern and Western Europe and Eurasian Steppe. Within this, emphasis will be placed on the study of migration and mobility, centres of power and economy and trade, social organization and settlement archaeology (villages, households, landscape and environment). I will also analyse archaeological remains that are indicative of ritual and religion (amulets, sacred sites, cult buildings, depots, burials) and artistic monuments. More recently, I have also been analysing the coexistence of different ethnic groups and cultures using the methods of bioarchaeology (genetics, isotopic chemistry) and biosocial archaeology within the HistoGenes project.
