My direct research focuses on the diachronic study of a topographically contiguous area of the necropolis of Thebes, one of the most important centres of ancient Egypt. This area that is situated on the hill of Sheikh Abd el-Qurna Hill comprises monuments and features from most periods of the use-life of the ancient cemetery, the most prominent of which are rock-cut tombs decorated with painted reliefs or murals from the New Kingdom. Representing the “great tradition” of ancient Egyptian tomb art, these are first-rate and extremely important source materials for my research into the period’s art history and religion. In addition, they offer opportunities for studying aspects of the architectural and archaeological contexts of the site. A further aim of my research is to explore the causes, modes, and role of tomb-reuse in shaping the sacred landscape of Thebes through the analysis of the archaeological and textual data of secondary burials in and around these tombs. There is also a strong emphasis on examining the social status of tomb-owners and answering the question of how this may have changed from period to period, as well as how this influenced the choice of burial site and type.
