The countries and peoples of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe developed a peculiar relationship with the Western Powers (France, Great Britain and the United States) at the beginning of the 19th century. The peoples living under German, Austrian, Russian or Ottoman rule, who often saw themselves as "backward", expected (in exceptional cases they received) first their independence, then their progressive rise from the liberal (or at least more liberal than their oppressors) influence and/or intervention of the Western Powers. The East-West relations of the modern age, including the relations between Russia and the Western powers, were thus conceived in this asymmetrical setting. These relations would not shed this inherent inequality in any substantial form during the 20th century either. The dynamics of the system of relations described here are examined by research and the resulting publications.

The internal relations, movements and ideologies among the peoples of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy; the radical impact of the peace treaties ending the First World War. The inter-war histories of Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania and Yugoslavia, their internal and foreign policies. Tragedy and disintegration during the Second World War. The history and ideological make-up of the region during the Cold War until 1968.
The political, economic and social history of the Republic of China from the overthrow of the imperial system in 1911 to establishment of the People's Republic in 1949; with special regard to aspects of the Chinese Civil War (first phase 1927-1936, second phase 1945-1949) as well as the role played in these events by the Western powers and the major states neighbouring China.
