Main research areas
My main field of research is contemporary Latin American culture, film and moving image, with a special focus on postcolonial and decolonial readings of cinematic expression. I explore alternatives to traditionally dominant, Western and Eurocentric institutional structures, genres, narrative modes, and cinematic strategies of expression, primarily in a Latin American context and primarily from the Cold War era to the present. I analyze cinematic forms of expression in their cultural context, embedded in the milieu of Latin American culture, thus framing my investigations in terms of national or regional traditions on the one hand, and globalization, postcolonial hierarchies and institutional dynamics, and decolonial approaches on the other.
