Canadian literature and cinema

My research focuses on twentieth-century and contemporary Canadian prose and film, with an emphasis on the impact of multiculturalism on the arts, its manifestations, and the often traumatic experiences of immigration. One of the main goals of Canada's multicultural policy over several decades has been to create a second home for immigrants in Canada, so it is perhaps unsettling that much of the fiction and film about immigrants focuses on the difficulties faced by newcomers. But this is almost natural: cultural and social programmes and ideologies, for all their aims and aspirations, cannot eliminate the problems and tensions of losing one's home and settling in a new one, and contemporary Canadian literature and film often reveal the inner world of immigrants in this context. This research is important because the fates, problems and their consequences depicted in these works represent elements of reality that are often outside the scope of other disciplines.
