In my research I examine the correlation between the dynamics of literary space and the occurrence of supernatural events in magical realist novels by Peter Høeg, Ib Michael, Gabriel García Márquez and Isabel Allende. I am looking for a deeper explanation regarding the functions of places in literary texts and the lack of said places. The aim of the research is to determine what circumstances create the background for the magical to happen in a magic realist novel. The changing or suspension of places are brought about by revolutions, by personal traumas and insurmountable differences. In these destabilized spaces, which do not engender their inhabitants, the characters of the novel face a reality that lost its ground quite literally. Since the novels that I selected can be interpreted in a postcolonial context, and this latter area of literary criticism has been widely cited as a channel to understand magic realist texts, I seek to combine the areas of space theory and postcolonial theory in my research.
