My main research interest is how "the century of progress" had to face social and environmental challenges when it came to spectacular urban development in Central Europe. I investigate therefore urban antimodernisms and nostalgia, and explore 19th-century urban environmental history.

I investigate how the fact that a modernizing elite is also a national other can affect politics, social movements and anti-urban cultural phenomena. I also analyse historical roots of urban-rural devides.
