Main research areas
The focus of my research is to investigate, from the phonetic point of view, the characteristics of spoken Brazilian Portuguese produced by native speakers, namely, Brazilian speakers, and non-native speakers, such as Hungarian learners of Portuguese as a Foreign Language. My goal is to describe not only the prosodic patterns of sentence types, including assertions, echo questions, wh-questions, exclamations, using acoustic measures (fundamental frequency, intensity and duration), but also the visual cues (head, brow and lips movements) that are at stake in the utterance production. This research project also sheds light in the role of the perception in the interpretation of utterance types in multimodal settings in order to analyze the weight of auditory and visual cues with native and non-native group of listeners. Finally, the acquisition of Portuguese sounds by non-native speakers, specifically Hungarian learners of Portuguese as a Foreign Language, is explored both in terms of production and perception. This way, this research can contribute to second language (L2) studies that analyze sources of errors in L2 acquisition, specially by identifying the Portuguese sounds that are particularly challenging for Hungarian learners of Portuguese as a Foreign Language.
