Coarticulatory vowel variability

I am studying vowel variation induced by coarticulation, especially by vowel-to-vowel coarticulation. I use acoustic analysis, electroglottography, ultrasound, and electromagnetic articulography.

Phonological vowel contrasts

Hungarian exhibits phonological vowel length (or vowel quantity) contrast. This means that vowels pair up according to their length (short vs. long), and form minimal pairs. In Hungarian, phonetic correaltes of the vowel length contrast include duration, and in the case of some vowels, vowel quality. I investigate how these two features cue the vowel quantity contrast in special speech modes/registers, such as motherese and fast speech, where we expect exaggeration or reduction of the contrast, respectively.

Segmental variability

My focus of research is on realisation of speech on the segmental level. Although my main focus is on vocalic segments, I also studied, for instance, the realisation of Hungarian /h/, segmental and suprasegmental features of motherese, and linguistic attitude.

Porduction and perception of sung vowels and consonants

Soprano singers produce vowels and consonants differently at high pitch from that of what we observe in speech. My research focuses on these differences in the articulatory, acoustic, and perceptual domains.

Articulatory and acoutstic realization of geminates

I am studying acoustic realization and articulatory organization of geminates (long consonsnats) and degeminated (shortening) consonants in Hungarian. (Degemination is observed if geminate consonants are positioned next to a short consonant.)
