As part of the ERC-funded project „Taming the European Leviathan,” a call for submissions is announced under the title “Bridging Generations: Student Perspectives about Health and Medicine in Post-War Europe.”
Applicants will explore medical and social history topics in post-World War II Europe through creative formats (essays, interviews, comics, short films, etc.), in collaboration with researchers from CELAB, based at CEU’s Budapest campus. The best submissions will be awarded a professional trip to Prague in the summer of 2027.
A variety of formats are welcome: Write a research essay / Conduct interviews / Design Comics / Develop a short film / Other creative expressions are also welcome
Diverse topics are encouraged: Socially Significant Diseases and Epidemics / “Male” and “Female” Spaces of Care / Visions of the “Healthy Life” / Sports, Health, and Pushing the Body to’ Its Limits / Sexuality and Giving Birth / Giving Birth: Oral Interviews with Grandmothers / Evolution of Informed Consent / Health and Ethics: Medicine and Human Rights / Health Care and National Traditions / Health Communication and Propaganda
Successful applicants will receive academic support and guidance via collaboration with CELAB researchers at CEU Budapest campus for a 10-month period. The best projects will have the opportunity to attend an international summer school in Prague during the summer of 2027.
Application procedure
Applicants should be university students at ELTE. Proposals for project ideas should be sent, with an applicant’s CV, letter of motivation and a contact person’s name, affiliations and email for references. Proposals should briefly include the title, aims, objectives and potential results and the expected timeline of activities for the 10-month period (max. 700 words). Applicants will receive notification of successful proposals by the 1st of February 2026. The first project month is the March 2026, and the project should be finalized by 15th of December 2026,
at the latest.
Funding and support: Personal tutors, organized expert consultations and other forms of academic support will be made available for successful applicants, e.g. access to CEU Library, academic databases and archives. Financial support for applicants will not be provided.
