Ancient Studies (Classics)

In the focus of my PhD thesis (defended in 2020) stood the study of Roman (-themed) myth and the memories of early Rome and Italy in Augustan literature. I have tried to approach this vast set of questions through case studies, which enabled me to get acquainted with both some of the greatest Augustan authors (Virgil, Propertius, Ovid, Livy) and the world of ancient Roman myth and ritual. My plan for the foreseeable future is further development along the same lines, especially towards a deeper, more overarching understanding of Roman mythology and an exploration of the Italian and Mediterranean cultural comtexts of (especially early) Rome. In addition to this, I have also been interested in the survival of Classical culture in our very era; the Classical tradition from the point of view of literary theory; and the day-to-day, popular culture of the Roman world.
