Violence and its representations in leate medieval and early modern Europe

I study the perception, representation, everyday and political uses of violence through French narrative, judicial and literary sources, viewing them in the context of the profound political, social and cultural transformations of the late medieval and early modern period. In my researches, I analyse rituals, everyday practices, criminality, justice, religious practices, printed culture and visual documents.

Information and communication in late medieval and early modern Western Europe

I study the topics, circumstances, genres of communication, the transfers among different media and genres, and their insertion in popular and learned culture before and after the advent of printing. My most important fields cover everyday oral communication, the rituals of power used in communication and the methods of data processing in medieval and early modern times.

Uses and representations of space in late medieval and early modern French cities

I study the everyday uses, visual and verbal representations of space, and the rituals of power utilising elements of urban space through the case studies of French cities, first of all, Paris. The analysis of the uses of space throws light on social mechanisms, characteristics of urban culture, aims and methods of ecclesiastical and secular powers during late medieval and early modern times.
